How to Clean an Outdoor HVAC Coil Safely

Before cleaning an exterior HVAC coil, shut off power to the outdoor unit at the disconnect and breaker. If the shutoff is unclear, the unit is damaged, or electrical components may be exposed, stop and request professional HVAC evaluation.

Clear loose leaves and debris from around the unit without forcing material farther into the coil. Keep the work area open and avoid bending the delicate fins.

Follow the equipment manufacturer's maintenance instructions. When permitted, use a gentle rinse rather than a pressure washer, keep water away from electrical components, and avoid unapproved chemicals that could damage the system.

Allow the area to drain and visually check the coil and cabinet before restoring power. Bent fins, corrosion, leaks, damaged wiring, poor performance, or anything beyond light routine cleaning should be assessed by a qualified HVAC professional.
