Hardwood Flooring Installation

Few finishes carry a home the way real wood does. Lunko Construction installs solid and engineered hardwood for Huntsville and North Alabama homeowners, with the planning, subfloor evaluation and edge detailing that a natural material deserves.

The first decision is usually solid versus engineered. Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood through its thickness; engineered hardwood bonds a real wood wear surface to a dimensionally stable core. Species, plank width, grade, finish sheen and whether the boards arrive prefinished or are finished on site all affect appearance, installation method and how the floor responds to the humidity swings a North Alabama home sees between seasons.

Wood is sensitive to what is beneath and around it, so we evaluate before committing. That means looking at the subfloor type and condition, flatness, fastening, movement underfoot, and the moisture conditions in the space, including crawl space or slab considerations where they apply. Manufacturers publish acclimation, moisture and flatness requirements for a reason, and following them is what keeps a wood floor from cupping, gapping or squeaking later.

Layout deserves real attention with wood because the grain is the pattern. We plan direction against the longest run and the joists where that matters, set starting and reference lines so walls and cabinet fronts stay parallel, and stagger end joints so the boards read as a natural field rather than a repeating staircase. Racking planks from several cartons keeps color and grain variation distributed instead of pooled in one area.

Existing flooring is removed first, and the transitions and trim are planned along with the field. Where hardwood meets tile, carpet or a different height we use thresholds and reducers selected to suit the wood, and stairs, landings and doorways get their own detailing. Baseboards and shoe molding are removed and reinstalled or replaced so the required expansion space at the perimeter stays hidden and functional.

Wood floors reward a simple routine: keep grit off the surface, use only cleaners the finish manufacturer approves, avoid wet mopping, place felt pads under furniture, use mats at entries and keep indoor humidity reasonably steady through the year. Natural color change over time is normal for many species, and we will tell you what to expect from the product you choose. We install hardwood; we do not offer sand-and-refinish work on existing floors.
